Maulana Azad Memorial Academy, Lucknow was established in September, 1975 with a mission to promote Maulana Abul Kalam Azad's unfalling ideals of patriotism, secularism, national integration and Communal Harmony among the Indians and to contribute positively towards the strengthening of the fabric of Indian society.

The academy strives to introduce this towering figure of Indian political scenario afresh to the modern generation by actively holding seminars for discussions and debates, organizing educational contests in schools and colleges and publishing books and the monthly journal, Azad Academy Journal

The Academy has been organizing seminars and symposia from time to time on subjects related to national integration, communal harmony and secularism graced with the presence of noted intellectuals and scholars.

Azad Academy Journal, a monthly journal is published by the academy in the English, Hindi and Urdu languages aimed to further Azad's ideals, sacrifices and contributions through academic research to a wider public in India and abroad. From a broader perspective, Maulana Azad Memorial Academy endeavors to realize a society and nation of secular and scientific temperament as envisioned by Azad decades ago.

The Academy has been registered under Section 21 of the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The current head office is located in Aurangabad Khalsa, Lucknow with Shariq Alavi as the president.

Journal

The Academy has been publishing a peer reviewed monthly magazine, Azad Academy Journal (ISSN2248-9835), regularly since 1986 to further Azad's ideals, sacrifices and contributions through academic research to a wider public in India and abroad and to highlight the different social and political issues of the country.

The journal has been warmly welcomed in educated circles all over India and has been able to elicit cooperation of a number of university professors and other eminent writers. From the year 2015 onwards the journal has started being published in Hindi and Urdu besides English. The journal is edited by Shariq Alavi who is also the president of the academy.

Programs

The Academy has been organizing seminars and symposia from time to time on subjects related to national integration, communal harmony, secularism.

Beside the seminars on 11th of November and 22nd of February every year as mark of the birth and death anniversary of Maulana Azad respectively, the academy actively organizes mushaira, symposium, debates, educational contests all round the year. The events are graced with the presence of noted intellectuals, scholars and political figures like Maulana Rabey Hasni Nadvi, Mr. Akhilesh Yadav, Chief Minister, Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Ahmed Hasan, Health Minister, Uttar Pradesh, Justice Hyder Abbas Raza, Mr. Rai Singh, Dr. Lalit Verma, Dr. Anis Ansari IAS, Senior Advocate Zafaryab Jilani, VC B. Hanumayya, Netram IAS, Padam Shri Prakash Singh,former DGP, Uttar Pradesh, Sri Ram Arun, former DGP, Uttar Pradesh, filmmaker Muzaffar Ali among many others.

Library : A LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE

INTRODUCTION

Maulana Azad Memorial Academy (MAMA) Library is one of the pioneer learning centers in the city of Lucknow. It was established in 1979. It is an autonomous library which is open for all the members of society regardless of any distinction. It is a type of special library devoted to the learning and teaching of the great freedom fighter, Bharat Ratna, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He was the first education minister of independent India and under his fostering care, the education system got proper shape and momentum. Apart from this, Azad wanted the system to be based on universal moral principles and values.

COLLECTION

The Maulana Azad Memorial Academy Library is an invaluable resource center for students, researchers, rural and urban people. The library holds around 3423 books in Hindi, Urdu, Arabic and English including approx. 1500 gifted books. Library houses valuable collections of rare documents such as rare books, old journals, photo album of freedom fighters of India. The special emphasis is laid on the collection of the books of pre-independence. The library has a good collection of old journals like Al- Hilal, Al- Balagh etc. which were started by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in 1912, 1913 respectively. Through these journals he propagated the ideas of India's nationalism. Later, these journals were banned by the British government. The library also holds his book, India Wins Freedom. The library also holds magazines like Dalit Voice, The Week, Tehelka, Outlook, Urdu Duniya, Young Muslim Digest, Islamic Voice, Sunday, Seminar, India Today etc. The library follows open access system. The user can study such obtained book inside the library as well as can borrow for studies at home. A good strength of users comes and enjoys the holdings of library which includes students, researchers and rural people also. Users come here and get access to these books in connection with their research work and day to day queries.

Documentation

The Academy has established separate Documentation center, which is just next to the library. It holds the clippings from important newspapers and journals on important developments and events pertaining to national integration and economic and social conditions of the people. These are classified on the basis to their subject. It holds 25 subjects. The library is planning to develop this center so that advanced documentation services can be provided to the researchers and academicians

Future vision

The library is planning to expand its services to the common people through the use of mobile library door to door system. The library is also going to be digital with subscriptions of e-journals.
